    An explicit KO-degree map and applications

    The goal of this note is to study the analog in unstable A1{{\mathbb A}^1}-homotopy theory of the unit map from the motivic sphere spectrum to the Hermitian K-theory spectrum, i.e., the degree map in Hermitian K-theory. We show that "Suslin matrices", which are explicit maps from odd dimensional split smooth affine quadrics to geometric models of the spaces appearing in Bott periodicity in Hermitian K-theory, stabilize in a suitable sense to the unit map. As applications, we deduce that KiMW(F)=GWii(F)K^{MW}_i(F) = GW^i_i(F) for i3i \leq 3, which can be thought of as an extension of Matsumoto's celebrated theorem describing K2K_2 of a field. These results provide the first step in a program aimed at computing the sheaf πnA1(An0)\pi_{n}^{{\mathbb A}^1}({\mathbb A}^n \setminus 0) for n4n \geq 4.Comment: 36 Pages, Final version, to appear Journal of Topolog

    Senior High School Students’ Mathematical Problem Solving Of Three-Variable Linear Equation System

    The aim of this research is to find the difficulties of students in solving word problems in the three-variable linear equation systems subject. Before they took a mathematical problem-solving exam, the learners were given reinforcement of prerequisite knowledge of the intended subject. The problem-solving test indicators used in this study were taken from Polya's problem-solving steps consisting of (1) recognizing the question, (2) making a plan for problem-solving (developing a plan), (3) implementing the plan for problem-solving, and (4) looking back. The research method used in this study was a qualitative descriptive. The subject in this study was 15 students who were 10 th graders of senior high school. The data were obtained from a student performance who took mathematical problems solving test. The result obtained from this study can be seen from the number of students whose achievement indicators formulate a plan of 49.6%, achievement in completing plans 14.1%, and achievement in checking solutions 2.2%. However, the indicators of understanding the problem area in the good category, namely 80%. The result of this study showed that the students were only able to solve the word problems for understanding the problem (good category) and devising the plan steps (mediocre category), whereas they got difficulties in solving the word problems in carrying out the plan and looking back (low category)

    Effect of an Iso-intense Continuous and Intermittent Training Programme on VO2 Max and Anthropometric Profile of Sedentary Males

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an iso-intense continuous and intermittent training program on maximum aerobic capacity ( O2 max) and other anthopometric profiles, like, body mass index (BMI) and fat mass of sedentary males. 24 healthy sedentary males of 21.8±3.7years participated in this study. They were divided into 3 groups, like, control group (n=9), continuous training group (n=7) and intermittent training group (n=8). Exercise group performed the training 3 days per week up to 12 week.The study was approved by ethical committee of the UniversitiSains Malaysia, KubangKerian, Kelantan, Malaysia. O2 max of each individual was determined following a graded exercise protocol to exhaustion, on an Excalibur Lode Cycle ergometer. For continuous exercise, subjects cycledat 60% of individual O2 max for 45 minute on an ergometer. In intermittent training, the subjects cycled at 45% of individual O2 max for 10 min followed by 5 min rest and then at 75% of individual O2 max for 10 min followed by 5 min rest. This repetition continued until 45 min. Both the training programme were madeiso-intense. The relative O2max of both the continuous and intermittent training groups improved significantly, but the degree of improvement was more in intermittent training programme. No improvement was observed in BMI. Regular physical activity is a part of healthy lifestyle that is known to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. Hence, in conclusion, our study indicated a beneficial effect of exercise training in improving the cardiorespiratory fitness ( O2 max), through continuous and intermittent training programme

    Potential utility of natural products as regulators of breast cancer-associated aromatase promoters

    Aromatase, the key enzyme in estrogen biosynthesis, converts androstenedione to estrone and testosterone to estradiol. The enzyme is expressed in various tissues such as ovary, placenta, bone, brain, skin, and adipose tissue. Aromatase enzyme is encoded by a single gene CYP 19A1 and its expression is controlled by tissue-specific promoters. Aromatase mRNA is primarily transcribed from promoter I.4 in normal breast tissue and physiological levels of aromatase are found in breast adipose stromal fibroblasts. Under the conditions of breast cancer, as a result of the activation of a distinct set of aromatase promoters (I.3, II, and I.7) aromatase expression is enhanced leading to local overproduction of estrogen that promotes breast cancer. Aromatase is considered as a potential target for endocrine treatment of breast cancer but due to nonspecific reduction of aromatase activity in other tissues, aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are associated with undesirable side effects such as bone loss, and abnormal lipid metabolism. Inhibition of aromatase expression by inactivating breast tumor-specific aromatase promoters can selectively block estrogen production at the tumor site. Although several synthetic chemical compounds and nuclear receptor ligands are known to inhibit the activity of the tumor-specific aromatase promoters, further development of more specific and efficacious drugs without adverse effects is still warranted. Plants are rich in chemopreventive agents that have a great potential to be used in chemotherapy for hormone dependent breast cancer which could serve as a source for natural AIs. In this brief review, we summarize the studies on phytochemicals such as biochanin A, genistein, quercetin, isoliquiritigenin, resveratrol, and grape seed extracts related to their effect on the activation of breast cancer-associated aromatase promoters and discuss their aromatase inhibitory potential to be used as safer chemotherapeutic agents for specific hormone-dependent breast cancer

    Effects of Unpredictable Variable Prenatal Stress (UVPS) on Bdnf DNA Methylation and Telomere Length in the Adult Rat Brain

    In utero exposure to stress can shape neurobiological and behavioral outcomes in offspring, producing vulnerability to psychopathology later in life. Animal models of prenatal stress likewise have demonstrated long-term alterations in brain function and behavioral deficits in offspring. For example, using a rodent model of unpredictable variable prenatal stress (UVPS), in which dams are exposed to unpredictable, variable stress across pregnancy, we have found increased body weight and anxiety-like behavior in adult male, but not female, offspring. DNA methylation (addition of methyl groups to cytosines which normally represses gene transcription) and changes in telomere length (TTAGGG repeats on the ends of chromosomes) are two molecular modifications that result from stress and could be responsible for the long-term effects of UVPS. Here, we measured methylation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (bdnf), a gene important in development and plasticity, and telomere length in the brains of adult offspring from the UVPS model. Results indicate that prenatally stressed adult males have greater methylation in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) compared to non-stressed controls, while females have greater methylation in the ventral hippocampus compared to controls. Further, prenatally stressed males had shorter telomeres than controls in the mPFC. These findings demonstrate the ability of UVPS to produce epigenetic alterations and changes in telomere length across behaviorally-relevant brain regions, which may have linkages to the phenotypic outcomes

    Frequency-dependent (ac) Conduction in Disordered Composites: a Percolative Study

    In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B{\bf57}, 3375 (1998)], we examined in detail the nonlinear (electrical) dc response of a random resistor cum tunneling bond network (RRTNRRTN, introduced by us elsewhere to explain nonlinear response of metal-insulator type mixtures). In this work which is a sequel to that paper, we consider the ac response of the RRTNRRTN-based correlated RCRC (CRCCRC) model. Numerical solutions of the Kirchoff's laws for the CRCCRC model give a power-law exponent (= 0.7 near p=pcp = p_c) of the modulus of the complex ac conductance at moderately low frequencies, in conformity with experiments on various types of disordered systems. But, at very low frequencies, it gives a simple quadratic or linear dependence on the frequency depending upon whether the system is percolating or not. We do also discuss the effective medium approximation (EMAEMA) of our CRCCRC and the traditional random RCRC network model, and discuss their comparative successes and shortcomings.Comment: Revised and reduced version with 17 LaTeX pages plus 8 JPEG figure
